Residents of the Brillion School District will decide the fate of a building referendum on April 1.
The referendum project will include the creation of a single, monitored entrance to the building. The current elementary/middle school building was created as the result of seven different building projects between 1938 and 1988, each providing for the needs of district students at the time. This has resulted in a building that has many ways in and many ways out–a modern security nightmare.
Secondly, the pick-up and drop off area would move to the rear of the building where there is room to create traffic/pedestrian flow patterns. The area in front was never designed for the way children come to school today and is an accident waiting to happen.
The creation of a kitchen/commons area will improve efficiencies by students and staff; also, it would enhance the buildings use during events held there. One thing to consider is the tight time budgets imposed on our district’s youngest learners. The time taken to get these particular students to and from the cafeteria is considerable and when totaled for the entire school year, significant time is taken away from instruction, which is what the district is invested in.
Lastly, the final part of the referendum would be the creation of a STEM (science, technology, engineering and mathematics) area. This program has put Brillion in a national spotlight. With the leadership of Steve Meyer, a class in a previous lifetime known as Shop has become an all encompassing program that applies everything taught in the district and puts it into real world application. …
Voters have told us to scale down and take a slower approach to what is needed in the school. We feel this is being responsive to that directive. We ask for your support on April 1st ….
