Committee wants Loose as Hilbert fire chief

HILBERT – The Hilbert Village Hoard’s Health Committee, which oversees the village’s fire department, is recommending that Mike Loose continue as fire chief. The full village board will made the final decision when it meets at 7 p.m. on Tuesday, March 10, in the board room at the village municipal building, 26 North Sixth Street.

Loose has been chief since Jan. 1 of 2014, but the members of the fire department took a vote in November, 2014, and narrowly recommended that Rick Thiel be named fire chief for 2015.

The village board twice refused to appoint Thiel and Loose stayed on the job by default. After Thiel resigned as a village board member in January, and Ken Stenklyft resigned as Village President, the village board changed the ordinance on the appointment of a fire chief.

The code now takes paid on call firefighters out of the selection process, with the nomination of a person for appointment as fire chief coming from the Health Committee, which consists of three village trustees. The fire chief, once appoint by the village board, would serve for an indeterminate term, not just for a calendar year as in the past.

Three members of the fire department applied for the chief’s job. The recommendation of Loose as chief was made in open session and is public record. The other two candidates’ names were not released because the committee interviewed them and deliberated in closed session.
