MANITOWOC – The Manitowoc County Sheriff’s Department is warning people about a surge in criminals masquerading as legitimate callers, trying to get people to reveal the Social Security account numbers.

The call identifies itself as coming from the Social Security Administration. If there is no answer, the caller leaves a message: “This call is from Social Security Administration. Your Social Security Number has been suspended.” Then the caller asks you to call a phone number.

One number used by the criminals is 325-200-4296.

Lt. Jason Jost said anyone who has given the callers their information needs to call their bank or other financial institution, and one of the three national credit reporting agencies’ fraud units, and have a fraud alert placed on your credit report to keep the crooks from using your identity to open a fraudulent account.
