HILBERT – The Hilbert Village Board’s Health Committee will meet at 6:30 p.m. Monday, Feb. 16, to discuss how it will go about selecting fire chiefs.
Earlier this week, the full village board approved an amendment to the village code that takes the volunteer firefighters out of the process. In the past, the firefighters voted on their choice, which their recommendation forwarded to the village board to consider.
In December and January, the village board twice refused to appoint Richard Thiel as fire chief, even though the firefighters recommended him to succeed Chief Mike Loose.
On Monday, the Health Committee – which oversees the fire department – will discuss the process and procedures it could use to recommend a fire chief candidate to the full village board.
The amendment to the ordinance also ended the long-standing practice of appointing a fire chief only for a 12-month calendar year term of office. Fire chiefs will not be appointed to an indefinite term.
Monday’s meeting is open to the public, and will be held at the village municipal building, 26 North Sixth Street.
