OBITARY: Lila E. (Krueger) Sommers

Lila E. (Krueger) Sommers, age 92, passed away peacefully on June 7, 2021 following a yearlong battle with cancer.

Lila was rewarded for her lifelong faith in God and Jesus Christ our Savior by joining Donald Sommers, her husband of 61 years, and other family and friends in eternity with God’s love and joy.

Lila was born on July 30, 1928 to the late Edmund and Hildegarde (Olm) Krueger. She was raised on the family farm in the town of Brillion, where her grandma taught her to knit and crochet when she was 12. She enjoyed these hobbies throughout her life and made Christmas stockings for generations of her family and friends. She still has the original green knitting needles that her Grandma gave her.

Lila graduated from Brillion High School in 1946. On June 9, 1951, she married her high school sweetheart, Donald Sommers. They raised three children Cindy, Don, and Dave, while enjoying 61 years of marriage until Don’s passing on May 7, 2012. Lila grew her faith which was very important to her, as a member of Trinity Lutheran Church in Brillion throughout her adult life.

Lila worked at Ariens Company as a receptionist for eight years before starting her family. After her children were grown, she worked for the Brillion School system from 1972 to 1999, first as a teacher’s aide and then as an assistant for the guidance counselor. Sharing her enjoyment for knitting and crocheting, Lila taught hundreds of women professionally for the Fox Valley Technical College system from 1963 to 1984 and personally with many friends.

Lila constantly demonstrated her love of family and friends through her involvement in their lives.

In her younger years, Lila enjoyed golf and once scored a hole in one on the second hole at Deer Run Golf Course. Lila was an active member of the Brillion Historical Society and the Ladies Aid Society for many years. Lila especially loved spending time with her three children, five grandchildren, and seven great-grandchildren. She created many cherished memories while sharing ice cream cones with her grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Lila loved to bake and cook and was famous for her homemade dinner rolls. She also enjoyed reading, playing cards, and working on puzzles. Lila especially enjoyed a good challenge in a game of Trouble.

Survivors include her daughter and son-in-law Cindy (Gene) Sievert of Brillion, son Don Mike Sommers of Oshkosh, son and daughter-in-law Dave (Laurie) Sommers of Brillion; her grandchildren: Dana (Chris) Hoyer and their children Ethan and Sevanna of Brillion, Briana (Nick) Abel and son Calin of Brillion, Samantha (Carl) Schwahn and their children Baleigh, Kennedi, and newborn son Parker of Brillion, Alyssa (Mike) Schmelter and their son Ryker of Brillion, Amanda and (Tony) Ott of Brillion; brother-in-law Harlen Krahn of Brillion and sister-in-law Gerry Weber of Hilbert, and many nieces and nephews.

The family would like to especially thank all of those who helped us care for Lila in her home. Without their love and support we wouldn’t have been able to keep Lila living in her home, where we experienced many more loving memories over the last fourteen months. We would also like to extend our thanks and gratitude to Heartland Hospice and their great nurses for their care and support.

The Pielhop Wieting Funeral Homes of Brillion & Reedsville is assisting the family with funeral arrangements.
