HILBERT – The Hilbert Village Board could have met in closed session on Tuesday, October 13, to consider making a bid to purchase the Hilbert Elementary School building from the School District of Hilbert.
But it chose not to. After making massive cuts to the draft 2016 village budget, trustees said it was unrealistic to consider making a bid for the soon-to-be-redundant elementary school building and grounds.
The building and its campus, on the northeast corner of Eighth Street and Calumet Street, will not be needed once construction is completed on an addition to the high school-middle school building at 11th and Milwaukee streets. The 4K through grade 4 programs will then move to the secondary school campus – three blocks west of State 57/32.
The school board had originally planned to demolish the old school building, but then decided to seek sealed bids from parties interested in purchasing the property.
The property is zoned residential and would have to be re-zoned for use as a commercial site.
