FOREST JUNCTION - A passenger van was destroyed by fire around 1:45 p.m. on Saturday, August 29.
It happened on Schmidt Road, just west of the intersection of State 57/32 and Calumet County K.
That is about a mile south of the Brown/Calumet county line.
The vehicle was quickly engulfed in flames. It was evacuated in time.
The Forest Junction Fire Department responded with an engine and water tanker, and had the fire knocked down within five minutes of its arrival.
Thick smoke blanketed the intersection, with the Calumet County Sheriff's Department blocking Schmidt Road and steering traffic away from the scene.
The vehicle appeared to be a total loss. The fire also spread to dry grass in the ditch on the north side of Schmidt Road.
