MANITOWOC - A 51-year old Manitowoc woman was arrested for homicide by intoxicated use of a motor vehicle for a crash shortly after 8:30 a.m. on Monday, February 8, that claimed the life of a nine-year old girl who was a passenger in the vehicle the woman drove.

"On behalf of Manitowoc County and our sheriff's office, I would like to offer our deepest condolences," Sheriff Dan Hartwig said.

Manitowoc County Sheriff's deputies and EMS personnel were dispatched to the scene on IU-43, just north of Middle Road in the Town of Manitowoc Rapids.

They found a 2006 Buick Rendezvous had been northbound when the driver lost control and entered the east ditch and rolled. The girl was thrown from the vehicle and died at the scene.

The driver was taken to Holy Family Memorial Hospital for treatment, and then arrested and booked into the Manitowoc County Jail.

Assisting deputies at the scene were the Branch Fire Department, Manitowoc Fire/Rescue, City of Manitowoc Police, Manitowoc County EMS First Responders, the Manitowoc County Coroner's Office, Wisconsin State Patrol and Hi-Way 42 Garage.

The emergency response was coordinated by the Manitowoc County Joint Dispatch Center.

The crash remains under investigation.
