OBITUARY: Allan Arthur Coenen

Allan Arthur Coenen, age 83, of Land O’ Lakes, WI, formerly of Brillion, died peacefully on July 3, 2018 at Heartwood Homes Senior Living in Appleton.


He was born on July 27, 1934, son of the late Ernest and Adeline (Duce) Coenen. Allan graduated from Appleton High School in 1952, and after working at Appleton Paper Mill, he served in the U.S. Army from 1954 to 1956. After his military service, he went on to further his education and graduated from U.W. Oshkosh and later received his Masters Degree in Mathematics from Marquette University. He married his high school sweetheart, Joan Gericke, who preceded him in death in 1971. He then married Ellen Michels on December 23, 1972. Allan was a high school math teacher and football coach at Brillion High School for over 29 years. After his retirement, he and Ellen moved to Land O’ Lakes, WI, where he coached the Eagle River junior varsity football team for 3 years. One of Dad’s greatest honors was being inducted into the Wisconsin High School Football Coaches Hall of Fame in 1992. He was proud of his military service, and served as Chaplin and was Past Commander of the Land O’ Lakes VFW Post 8400. Dad loved fishing, football, card games and his family.

Survivors include his children: James (Ronda) Michels, Julianne (Gene) Huddleson, Kathleen (Fuzzy) Wieting, Michael (Julie) Coenen and Paul (Angie) Coenen. Eleven grandchildren: Evan(Amanda) Huddleson, Karissa Wieting, Matthew Wieting, Joshua (Kayla) Wieting, Nicole (Will) Fietzer, Tyler (Alexa) Coenen, Kevin Coenen, Krystle Coenen, Angel Coenen, Katianna Coenen and Zig Coenen, as well as seven great grandchildren: Brylee Ellen Huddleson, Ava Wieting, Sophia Wieting, Treven and Kimberly Fietzer, Gunner and Arie Coenen. Allan is further survived by a sister: Marian Gambsky, a brother, James (Rosie) Coenen, a sister-in-law, Sis Coenen, as well as many other nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends. Allan was preceded in death by his first wife Joan, his wife Ellen, his siblings, Ralph Coenen, Carol (Chuck) Kargus, and Arlene (Don) Netzel, brothers-law and sisters-in-law, Gordon Gambsky, John W. (Sarah) Hale, James S. (Delores) Hale, Marian (Don) Derfus, Clarice (Clarence) Wage, Jeanette (Ervin) Bubolz, Lucille (Elroy) Bubolz.

Mass of Christian Burial will be held on Monday July 9, 2018 at 3:00 p.m. at Holy Family Catholic Church, 1100 West Ryan St. in Brillion. The Rev. Tom Pomeroy will officiate. Burial will be in Holy Family Cemetery, Brillion. Visitation will take place on Monday at the church from NOON to 2:30 p.m. Online condolences may be made at www.wieting-funeralhome.com
