OBITUARY: Charles E. Nate

Charles E. Nate, age 88, of 9230 Grimms Road, Maple Grove, died peacefully Tuesday afternoon, Oct. 11, 2016 at the home of his son & daughter-in-law, Cary and Sharon Nate.


Charles was born in the Town of Franklin on July 12, 1928 to the late Charles H. and Margarette (Welch) Nate, Sr. He attended grade school and Jr. High School at St. Patrick’s School in Maple Grove, and graduated as valedictorian of his class from Valders High School, with the class of 1946. Charles married Marion J. Ansorge on Nov. 27, 1952 at Sacred Heart Catholic Church, Manitowoc, with Msgr. Louis Schorn, Rev. Raymond Novak, and Rev. Edward H. Radey all presiding at the ceremony. Marion preceded him in death on Oct. 18, 2008.

Charlie farmed in the Maple Grove area his entire life, and was a lifetime member of St. Patrick’s Church in Maple Grove, later St. Mary-St. Patrick’s of Reedsville, and most recently Holy Family Parish of Brillion. He was lector, commentator, and usher at all three parishes; lifetime member of St. Patrick’s Holy Name Society; and was chairman and/or co-chair of the annual parish picnic at all three parishes. Charlie also served as secretary-treasurer of St. Patrick’s Cemetery Assoc. since 1992. He was an Honorary Lifetime Charter Member of Elizabeth Ann Seton Council #5798 Knights of Columbus – serving three years as Grand Knight; member of the 4th Degree Assembly #1212 of Manitowoc and the Honor Guard since 2002; and was an active member of the Friends of St. Patrick and the Friends of the Branch River.

Charles was also very involved in Township & County Government. He served as Clerk of the Town of Franklin for over 50 years; Secretary of the Town of Franklin Board of Appeals over 30 years; member and secretary of the Manitowoc County Board of Adjustment over 25 years; and served as secretary-treasurer of the Manitowoc County Unit of the Wisconsin Town’s Association for 15 years.

Survivors include one daughter & son-in-law, Anne Laurie and Robert Dirkman of Francis Creek; two sons & daughters-in-law, John C. and Barbara Nate of Pewaukee, and Cary J. and Sharon Nate of Maple Grove; nine grandchildren: Amber and Christopher Nate; Kelly and Jesse Dirkman; Tabitha (Justehn) Hetue, Jacob Nate, Travis (Anna) Nate, Jade Nate and Crystal Nate; a foster granddaughter, Alysa Rowden; and five great grandchildren: Trenton, Cora, Sophia, LeRoy, and Chloe. He is further survived by one sister, Margaret Herrmann of Manitowoc; along with nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends. In addition to his parents and his wife, he was also preceded in death by his father and mother-in-law: Henry and Myrtle Ansorge; one brother, James Nate; a sister and two brothers-in-law: Veronica and Edward Saur, and John Herrmann; a half brother-in-law, Wayne Ansorge; and two sisters-in-law: Ruth and Annie Ansorge.

Funeral services were held at 11:00 a.m. Monday, Oct. 17, 2016 at Holy Family Parish, Brillion. The Mass of Christian Burial was celebrated by Rev. Timothy Brandt, with burial in St. Patrick’s Cemetery, Maple Grove.
