OBITUARY: Daniel L. School

After a long and courageous battle with cancer, Daniel L. School, 72, of Brillion died on Friday, September 27, 2019.

Dan started on a crew at Keller Structures at age 16 and later retired as an area supervisor after 39 years with the company. He married Joyce Kesler on July 10, 1967–his 20th birthday. The help of many family members and friends made it possible for them to build their dream home in 1978. He started D.J.’s Custom Windows (now known as School Home Improvements) with his brother John in 1985. He and John also partnered with Bill Kees to establish S.K.S. Mini Warehousing. Dan spent many hours throughout his retirement doing various projects for many people and working for Larry’s Livery Service. He enjoyed driving his Mustang, cutting his 2.5 acres of lawn with his John Deere riding lawnmower, woodworking, traveling, camping and attending his grandchildren’s sporting events. When he was home, his miniature daschund, Precious, was almost always by his side.

He is survived by his wife Joyce; son Dan (Anna-Marie) of Baraboo, daughters Michelle School-Reese (Tony) and Nicole Fischer (Kevin) both of Brillion. Grandchildren Rylee, Daniel Rowan and Ayla School of Baraboo, Jackson & Bennett Reese and Elise & Derek Fischer, all of Brillion. He is also survived by siblings Dick (Donna), Kathy Deffke (Tom), Mary Jansen (Tim), Ellen Winkler (Randy), Karen Asbel (Dennis), John (Heidi), Alice Thayer (Jim), Peter and Tony; many sisters and brothers-in-law Roger Kesler, Dennis (Barb) Kesler, Paul Rluhland, Ginny (Harland) Wincentsen, Jim Marois, Karen (Joe) Franczek, Don (Diane) Kesler, Janice Schmidt, Bob (Lucy) Kesler & Dean Kesler; as well as many nieces and nephews including Amy Baehman, Matt Ruhland, Stephanie Shankle, Carrie Rydzewski and Mark Ruhland. In addition to family, Dan & Joyce were blessed with the support of many special friends.

He was preceded in death by his mother Ardyth, father Louis, sister Susan, grandson Kevin Fischer II, mother-in-law Virginia Kesler, father-in-law Irvin Kesler and best friend Dick Penterman as well as several sisters and brothers-in-law: Dianne Ruhland, Carol Marois, Duane Kesler, Bernie Schmidt, Carl Kesler and Shelly School.

A wake in Dan’s honor will be held on Thursday, October 17 from 4:00 p.m. until 7:00 p.m. at Wieting Funeral Home in Brillion. The visitation will continue on Friday, October 18 from 9:00 a.m. until 10:45 a.m. at St. Katharine Drexel, St. Francis Site in Hollandtown with Mass of Christian Burial to follow at 11:00 a.m. Officiating will be the Rev. Don Everts with burial to follow in the church cemetery.

Dan was a casual man, if you’re able to join us feel free to come as you are–jeans and tennis shoes are welcome. In lieu of flowers the family would appreciate donations to establish a scholarship for area graduates pursuing a career in the construction field.

The family would like to thank the following members of the Calumet County Hospice team–Cindy, Amanda, Leon and Donna. We are also grateful for the extra support given by friends Nan Penterman, Don & Jeanette Liebzeit, Gary Halbach, Jeff Schwabenlander and Dad’s right hand man in the workshop–his brother Dick
