OBITUARY: Norbert “Nubbs” L. McHugh

Norbert “Nubbs” L. McHugh, age 86, of Appleton, passed away at home on Aug. 12, 2016, after a long illness.

Nubbs was born in Appleton to Francis “Grover” and Mary (Lupton) McHugh on Aug. 31, 1929. He attended St Mary’s elementary school in Appleton, and St Mary’s High School in Menasha. He enlisted in the Navy during the Korean War from 1952 to 1954, serving on the USS Midway.

Nubbs met and married the love of life, Delores Ebenhoe, at Klein Brothers Barrel House. And the first thing he said to her was: “Where have you been all my life?” They were married at St. Mary’s, Brillion, on May 4, 1957. Together they loved to dance and travel to see their friends. They have two children, six grandchildren, and three great-grandchildren.

He was a Mason and residential contractor. He worked for many of the construction companies throughout Wisconsin.

He was preceded in death by his parents Francis and Mary, brothers Cliff and Franny and sister Patti.

Nubbs is survived by his wife, Delores; a sister, Mary Ellen Schwaller; a son, James (Carol) McHugh of Madison; a daughter, Sandy (Jim) Gruenke of Manitowoc; grandchildren: Francis (Kristen) Gruenke of Neenah; Genni (Alex) Mikos of Stream Wood, Ill.; Lance Gruenke (Madison), Bridget Gruenke, Cassandra McHugh, and Megan McHugh; great grandchildren: Nathan and Danielle Gruenke, and Tobias; and many beloved nieces and nephews.

A Mass of Resurrection will be celebrated at 11 a.m. on Saturday at Sacred Heart Catholic Church, 222 E. Fremont St., Appleton, with Father Donald Zuleger officiating. Friends and relatives may visit in the Sacred Heart Room on Saturday from 9 a.m. until 10:45 a.m. Interment with full military honors performed by Appleton VFW Post 2778 will take place at St. Mary Catholic Cemetery, Appleton, on Monday, Aug. 22. In lieu of flowers, a memorial fund has been established.
