SHANTYTOWN, LAKE WINNEBAGO – There were over 4,600 shanties out on Lake Winnebago for the opening weekend of the sturgeon-spearing season. That and the opening day harvest count showed that the 2019 opening weekend was a lot like opening weekend a year ago.

The DNR’s Ryan Koenigs is predicting a full 16-day season on Winnebago and a 4 to 7 day season on the upriver bodies of water.

Stockbridge harbor led with 30 of the 83 fish registered on opening day for Winnebago.

The opening day record fish, taken on Winnebago by Jonathan Eiden of Appleton, came in at 85½ inches and 171 pounds. Photo accompanies this story.

SAD NOTE: The Calumet County Sheriff’s Department is investigating the death of a snowmobiler on opening day. It happened around 4:30 p.m. near Stockbridge. The operator was killed when the sled crashed and landed on him .
