Fatal accident involving vehicle, carriage in Manitowoc County

CATO – One man was pronounced dead at the scene of a serious crash Sunday morning following a collision between a vehicle and a horse-drawn carriage.


A 42-year-old woman from Brillion, driving a 2020 GMC Terrain, struck the carriage, operated by a 27-year-old man of Manitowoc County.


Both were traveling eastbound on Highway 10 near Maertz Road, and the vehicle struck the carriage from behind. The accident happened at approximately 8:55 a.m., the Manitowoc County Sheriff's Office reported.


The man was ejected from the carriage. A 13-year-old passenger was also ejected from the carriage and was transmitted by ambulance to treat injuries.


Agencies who assisted in the accident included the Reedsville Fire Department and First Responders, Branch Fire Department, Valders Fire Department, St. Nazianz Fire Department, Theda Star Helicopter, Manitowoc County Coroner's Office, Manitowoc County Highway Department, Manitowoc County Joint Dispatch, Wisconsin State Patrol, and Hi-Way 42 Garage and Towing.


No additional details were released. The news release said that the Wisconsin State Patrol is conducting a full reconstruction of the crash and the investigation is ongoing.
