Klug wins state championship in Madison

Brillion has its first state champion wrestler in 33 years.
Junior Colton Klug joined an elite list of six wrestlers in Brillion sports history on Saturday night at the Kohl Center in Madison in the Division 3 individual state championship.
Klug defeated Kingston Galetka (senior, Pardeeville) 9-1 in the 150-pound title match.
Other state champion winners in history include Dave Krueger (1960), Howard Prizl (1964), Kevin Giese (1990), Rhet Reichardt (1992) and Perry Miller (1993).
The title match concluded a dominant weekend for Klug. He beat Mason Hird (senior, Prairie du Chien) 8-3 in Thursday’s quarterfinal. Then on Friday, he beat Benjamin Miller (senior, Wittenberg-Birnamwood) 11-1 in the semifinal.
A celebratory parade for Klug is scheduled for Sunday afternoon at 3 p.m. The Brillion Fire Department will help guide Klug and the Lions from Deer Run to the high school.
Other Lions who reached podium in Madison included Weston Schmidt (third place, 175 pounds), Parker Spierings (fourth, 126 pounds) and Brinley Miller (fifth, 114 pounds)
Jace Nicklaus (138 pounds) and Sevanna Hoyer (152 pounds) also represented Brillion in the state meet.
