BRUSSELS – The Brillion football team improved to 2-0 this season with a 28-12 non-conference win at Southern Door (0-2) on Thursday night.
The Lions took control of the game in the second half. After trailing 12-7 at halftime, Brillion scored on the first possession of the third quarter and never relinquished the lead.
Chase Thibodeau scored two touchdowns, the first to put the Lions up 14-12 in the third. His second touchdown put the score farther out of reach with 58 seconds left in the game.
For most of the Brillion team, it was a return trip to Southern Door, who won a playoff game between the two teams in 2022. Southern Door also won in Brillion last season.
“Coming back and just getting the win, that feels great,” Thibodeau said.
Brillion’s defense limited talented Eagles quarterback Drew Daoust from big plays. Hayden Cousin forced a fumble in the fourth quarter that was recovered by Joe Shimek, which was one of the highlight plays for Brillion's defense.
After a dropped Southern Door punt attempt, Brillion scored on a 14-yard Brennen Kleist run to go ahead 21-12.
The teams exchanged touchdowns in the first half. Sophomore Weston Schmidt scored his first varsity touchdown to put the Lions ahead 7-6 in the first quarter. Daoust threw a 22-yard touchdown pass before halftime to put the Eagles up 12-7.
Brillion Coach Tanner Behnke told the team after the game that it was a "gut check" for them.
“They’re going to make us play for four quarters, are we going to be able to outlast them for four quarters,” Behnke said. “This is going to be a full 48-minute football game, and we talked about that beforehand.”
Brillion beat Hilbert 14-0 in Week 1. Next Thursday, Sept. 5, they’ll host Chilton in the first conference game of the season.
In other area Week 2 games, Hilbert plays at Randolph on Friday. Reedsville hosts Lourdes Academy.
