MADISON - The co-chair of the state legislature's powerful Joint Committee on Finance, who resigned from office shortly after being re-elected in November, is going to become executive director of the Wisconsin Association of Health Plans.

In the legislature, John Nygren represented the Marinette area in the state Assembly. He was also largely responsible for the state's efforts to fight the opioid epidemic.

His daughter Cassandra Nygren, age 31, is an addict serving a 10-year prison term for a drug-related reckless homicide, and other charges.

The association cited John Nygren's experience in health care, government and leadership as reasons why he was chosen to succeed Nancy Wenzel, who is retiring as Wisconsin Association of Health Plans CEO. She delayed her retirement several month because of the issues involving the COVID-19 crisis.

The group is the public voice of community-based health insurance coverage plans in Wisconsin.
