Evelyn Rose (nee Stangel) Schlies, 98, formerly of Brillion, WI passed away peacefully with family by her side at St. Mary's Home, Felician Village in Manitowoc on Wednesday, January 29, 2025.

Evelyn was born July 31, 1926 in the Town of Carlton, Kewaunee County to the late Celestine and Frances (Slifka) Stangel. She graduated from Kewaunee High School and married her high school sweetheart Edward Schlies on June 7, 1947. Evelyn and Edward (Ed) were Queen and King of their high school prom and knew then they were destined to be together. They exemplified the "greatest generation.” Ed served in the US Navy in WWII while Evelyn took flying lessons with the Civil Air Patrol and worked in the Kewaunee County Courthouse. Post-war, they lived in DePere and Milwaukee while Ed attended St. Norbert’s and then graduated from Marquette University. Following Ed's graduation in 1950, they became long-time residents of Brillion, WI. Ed spent his entire career with the Brillion Iron Works, where he headed the plant engineering department and served on staff. Evelyn and Ed raised their family of 8 children in Brillion with a focus on faith, family and community service.
Evelyn was an active member and committee chair of several community organizations. She was a dedicated member of the Brillion Woman's Club, past president and 50+ year member of the Christian Mothers, Bridge Club, the Red Hat Society and for 65 years a very talented singer in the church choir at St. Mary's and Holy Family Catholic parishes. She was a Girl Scout Troop Leader and a Cub Scout Den Mother. As an involved mother she was the family Chief Financial Officer as well as the Chief Operating Officer to ensure the children made it to their music lessons, dance lessons, recitals, sporting events and practices. She was a coach, providing encouragement and support for her children's endeavors and the family chef and baker which she loved and excelled at. Her spaghetti and meatballs recipe remains a family favorite.
Evelyn loved spending time with her family and friends, music, swimming, camping, golfing, gardening and traveling. She felt blessed to have the opportunity to travel to many US and international destinations. Her global travels included visits to Czechia (home of her ancestors), Germany, Italy, Austria, Norway, Sweden, Finland, Denmark, Russia, China, Japan, Brazil, Chile, Fiji, New Zealand and Australia. She cherished the memories of her many trips. Survivors include two sisters, Jeanette Schwantes, North Liberty, IA; Donna (Jerome) Heimerl Heckel, DePere, WI; five daughters and three sons-in-law, Christine and Gerald Garber, Janesville; Connie and Stephen Menchal, Brookfield; Patricia Pollen, Appleton; Cathryn and James DeFurio, Tampa, FL; Laura Dudley, Milwaukee; three sons and daughters-in-law: Steven and Jill Schlies, Dublin, OH; Peter and Rebecca Schlies, Lexington, SC; Edward and Kristen Schlies, Columbus, GA.
24 grandchildren: Tina (Bryan) Nording, Gary Garber, Andrea (Keith) Sadler, Emily Menchal, Andrew (Cortney Heimerl) Menchal, Rachel Pollen, Laura (Luis Partridge) De Furio, Anthony (Jenny) DeFurio, Michael DeFurio, Matthew (Sylvia) DeFurio, Nicholas DeFurio, Helen Dudley, Samuel Schlies, Steven Schlies, David Schlies, Caroline Schlies, Sr. Joanna Schlies, Mark (Natasha) Schlies, Patrick Schlies, Phillip Schlies, Daniel Schlies, Jacob Schlies, Nathan Schlies, DO, Mary Schlies.
11 great grandchildren: Camden, Chase, Autumn, Kyleigh, Killian, Abe, Vivian, Alma, Lucia, Mary and Leo. Many nieces and nephews and their families also survive.
She was preceded in death by her beloved husband Ed, infant daughter Mary Cathryn Schlies, an unnamed infant, her parents, Ed's parents Wenzel and Elizabeth (Pilzak) Schlies, her son-in-law: Robert Pollen; her brothers-in-law and sisters-in-law: Reuben Schwantes, Eugene Heimerl, Mary (Louis) Krummel, Frank (Rose) Schlies, Clara (Raymond) Jurgens, Bea (John) Porubcansky, Stella (Eugene) Stangel, Wencil (aka Jimmy) Schlies, Rose (Floyd) Prokash, Eva (Ed) Mleziva.
Funeral Services will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Saturday, February 8, 2025 at Holy Family Catholic
Church (1100 W. Ryan Street), Brillion. Officiating at the Mass of Christian Burial will be the Rev. Tom Pomeroy and Deacon Greg Van Thiel.
The family will greet relatives and friends on Saturday, February 8, 2025 at church from 9:00 a.m. until 10:45 a.m.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Holy Family Parish.
