CALUMET COUNTY – Portions of State 57/32 and State 55 will be closed next week as road crews conduct chip sealing projects Monday, July 16, through Thursday, July 19.

Portions of both highways will be closed during chip seal work. Chip seals consist of a layer of crushed stone placed on top of an application of liquid asphalt to reduce roadway deterioration and prolong the life of the pavement.

Chilton to New Holstein

Maintenance crews will chip seal State 57/32 between New Holstein and Chilton from 7 a.m. Monday, July 16, to 4 p.m. Thursday, July 19.

The highway will be closed and traffic detoured over County G in Chilton to County Road H in New Holstein during chip seal operations. Local access to businesses and properties in the work zone will be maintained.

South from Kaukauna

Crews will also chip seal State 55 from U.S. 10 north to County KK (Calumet St./Man-Cal Road) in Kaukauna from 7 a.m. Monday, July 16, to 4 p.m. Thursday, July 19. Traffic will be detoured over Outagamie County CE (College Avenue East) and County N.

Chip-sealing involves spreading hot tar on the entire pavement surface, then spreading loose rock chips over the tar. This may result in loose stones on the roadbed for a few days. Once the chip seal has cured, crews will sweep the highway to clear away loose stones.

Motorists are urged to take extra caution, drive slowly, and allow additional space between vehicles to prevent damage from any loose stone chips. Reduced speed is advised because traction is limited. Motorcycle operators should reduce their speed significantly and  make turning movement with caution.

Maintenance operation schedules can change due to weather and maintenance crew manpower.
