Rock the Block kicks off May 9

BRILLION – Habitat for Humanity’s highly advertised Rock the Block event comes to Brillion next weekend.

Hundreds of volunteers will take part in the weekend long event designed to beautify the city and it begins with a kickoff event on Thursday, May 9.

The morning starts at 8:15 a.m. at Horn Park. The Brillion High School marching band will perform to build the energy level, Habitat for Humanity’s Ryan Roth says.

“Everybody is welcome from the whole city and around the city,” Roth said. “We’re pretty excited about that. We’ll have a few speakers … then get to work.”

Planning for the weekend started last September with newsletters and door-to-door visitations.

“From the very get-go, just a really, really good response,” Roth said.

The planning included gathering volunteers, business sponsorships and the actual projects they’ll put time in on.

The weekend will include 21 residential projects and 15 community projects around the city with parks, schools and churches all on the to-do list.

“The residents of Brillion really have welcomed the work we do with open arms. I think there’s a common understanding and desire to keep neighborhoods vibrant,” Roth said.

Roth says that Rock the Block creates the ability to do that.

“There’s just a real desire to improve on the housing in Brillion and look for affordable housing solutions for the future,” Roth said.

Habitat for Humanity purchased a house on MacArthur Street and are looking to purchase more affordable housing for families. The house will be ready for a family in 2020.
