ASHWAUBENON – Shopko Stores is closing 39 of its stores, including one in Wisconsin.
All but one of the stores being shuttered are the small-town version branded as Shopko Hometown. The Wisconsin store slated to close is in Mauston.
The chain has 222 Shopko Hometown stores, and corporate spokesperson Michelle Hansen no other Wisconsin stores are targeted for closure.
She said there are no plans to close any other Shopko or Shopko Hometown stores in Wisconsin. The chain has 75 stores in the state.
Each of the stores being closed will have a liquidation sale beginning on Friday and running through February. All were typified by poor retail performance, and the decisions to close were made based on profitability, sales trends and projections, and growth potential.
Shopko was founded in 1962 in Green Bay and operates 363 stores in 24 states throughout the Central, Western and Pacific Northwest regions.
Most of the stores being closed are in Kansas, Nebraska, South Dakota, North Dakota and Utah.
