Editor's note: Tony Sweere, the longtime administrator of the Hilbert School District, announced his upcoming retirement in a letter to the district on Thursday. The letter is below.
Parents, Students and Community Members -
I am writing this email to let you know that I have submitted my letter of retirement to the Hilbert Board of Education, effective June 30, 2026. The Board will take final action on my request at the January Board Meeting. I want to give the Board enough time to conduct a search for my replacement, so they can be ready to go on July 1, 2026.
I have been so fortunate to serve my hometown community in this role for 20 years. The Board took a chance on a young educator 20 years ago and I was determined to never let them regret that decision. The support I have received from the Board of Education, Administrators, staff, students and community over those years has been incredible. WE (meaning the Board, Administrative Team, Staff, Community and Students) have done a lot of great things in that 20 years, including the passing of five referendum questions in twelve years. Those five successful referendums have put our District in a great place in regards to facilities for the foreseeable future. As a community, you are so fortunate to have a great group of teachers and support staff who care deeply about OUR kids. They made my job easier over the years. To the students, you are why I got up every morning and came to work with a positive attitude and unlimited energy. I knew there were students who needed me to be my best every day and I was not going to fail them. What an honor it was to watch you come in the doors as 4 year-olds and walk across the stage as 18 year-old graduates. Not a better job in the world! I could not have done all of this without the support of my family. Hillary was often my sounding board and always my firm foundation of support. I had the distinct opportunity to go to work with my kids for many years. I know they enjoyed that, but there were often many times it was not cool to have your dad as the District Administrator. I know there were many days that this made things tough on them, but in the end they are better because of it.
I have put a lot of thought, time and reflection into this decision and now feels like the right time for me and more importantly, my family. It is time to close this chapter in my life and flip a page to something new. I have put a lot of time and energy into the School District of Hilbert and I cannot be more proud of where we are today! I want nothing but the best for Hilbert, its staff and its students. Thank you for this great opportunity and truly rewarding part of my educational journey. GO WOLVES!
Yours in education,
Anthony Sweere
