Chase and crash: teen dies as stolen car wrecks

MANITOWOC – The state Department of Justice is handling the investigation of an early-morning crash that killed a 17-year old boy, who was the passenger in a vehicle believed to be stolen and fleeing a Manitowoc County sheriff’s deputy.

It started at 1:15 a.m. on Thursday, January 10. near Cleveland, when a deputy spotted a van southbound on County LS (Lakeshore Road) near County X (North Avenue) at a high rate of speed. The deputy tried to effect a traffic stop but the van continued at speeds estimated at over 80 miles per hour.

The driver of the 2013 Chrysler van lost control of the vehicle on a curve. It went into the ditch on the west side of the road, overturned and hit a tree. The deceased, a 17-year old male from Sheboygan, was ejected from the back seat and died at the scene.

The driver, a 15-year old Sheboygan girl, and the front seat passenger, a 14-year old Sheboygan girl, were wearing seat belts. They were extricated by use of the Jaws of Life and were taken by ambulance to St. Nicholas Hospital in Sheboygan with non-life threatening injuries.

The vehicle was believed to be operated without the owner’s consent. No names are being released.

The Cleveland First Responders, Manitowoc Fire and Rescue, Cleveland Fire Department, Sheboygan Police Department and Manitowoc County Highway Department managed the crash scene. Handling the investigation are the Wisconsin State Patrol, the state Department of Justice, Manitowoc County Coroner’s Office, Manitowoc Country District Attorney’s Office and the Human Services Departments from Manitowoc County and Sheboygan County.
