APPLETON –  The Outagamie County Sheriff’s Department is warning people about theft scammers impersonating deputies on the phone, and trying to pick victims’ pockets.

“We have multiple reports of a person calling people purporting to be Deputy Jacobs of the Outagamie County Sheriff’s Office,” the real sheriff’s department said on Tuesday, February 19.

The phone number the scammers have used is 920 574 6424, so it appears to be a local number.

The impersonator calling people is advising victims they have a “federal failure to appear warrant” and ask to meet the person at our court house.

Towards the end of the contact the impersonator offers to settle the warrant over the phone at a “reduced” fine or cost.

The real Outagamie County Sheriff’s Office said it will never request payment like this over the phone.

“Please do not succumb to one of these scams,” the sheriff’s department advised. “When in doubt call your local law enforcement and ask to speak to an officer.”
