Deer feeding still banned in Manitowoc County

MANITOWOC – The state Department of Natural Resources lifted the ban on feeding deer in 15 counties as of August 4. One of those counties is Manitowoc County.

But there’s a problem: A county ordinance banning the feeding of deer remains in effect. The state lifting its ban has no effect on the county ordinance.

“With the recent changes under 2017 Wisconsin Act 41 being contrary to the current Manitowoc County ordinance, a discussion has taken place with County Board Chairperson Jim Brey,” said Deputy Inspector Jason Orth, of the Manitowoc County Sheriff’s Department. “Chairperson Brey will be reviewing this matter with [a county board committee] to discuss if changes should be made to the current ordinance.”

In the meantime, the county ordinance is alive and well and violators can be cited. The ban is still in place as long as the ordinance is in effect.
