HILBERT – Jane Gehl’s annual summer school class at Hilbert High School keeps growing. The class this summer numbered 27 students, even though there were no seniors (Class of 2020) who signed up.

They were supplanted by seven high school juniors who stole the show.

The course is formally known as “Exploratory in Oil Painting” and Gehl stresses classic oil-painting skills.

Each student paints a landscape scene, using a photograph from a magazine as the base model.

On July 1, the Class held a reception in downtown Hilbert at the Pfister Room of the Village Centre Mall – with refreshments, students dressed to the hilt, and plenty of artwork to take in.

Some of the biggest praise was reserved for junior Owen Bates, whose painting of a stark prairie landscape –with grass and wheat and blue sky creating a strong horizontal plane, and a lonely windmill interrupting it with vertical movement.
