TOWN OF RANTOUL – A 34-year old Town of Rantoul woman was critically injured early Monday morning (June 17) when she was rundown by a vehicle driven by a burglary suspect.
Calumet County Sheriff Mark Wiegert said the incident happened at 3:30 a.m. in the 5600-block of Irish Road, about two miles north of County E in central Calumet County. Calumet County sheriff’s deputies said the woman heard suspicious sounds from her garage and went to investigate. There she found the suspect in the act of burglary. He fled to a car across the road and when the woman followed him, he ran her down with his vehicle.
Her injuries were critical and Gold Cross Ambulance called for the Theda-Star EMS helicopter, which responded to the scene and transported her to the ThedaCare Regional Medical Center in Neenah.
Meanwhile, a sheriff’s deputy found the suspect in a vehicle that had crashed at County E and Irish Road, south of the burglary scene. The man had minor injuries that were treated at the scene. He was arrested for OWI causing injury and for burglary. The suspect is a 21-year old Village of Hilbert resident, with an extensive traffic and criminal record.
The sheriff’s department was assisted by Hilbert-Potter EMS First Responders, the Potter Fire Department, Chilton Fire Department, Gold Cross Ambulance, ThedaStar, Chilton Police and New Holstein Police.
The Chilton Fire Department established a landing zone to allow the helicopter to transport the victim to the regional trauma center.
