    Mary Phipps, age 84, a Brillion resident, passed away peacefully on Tuesday morning, March 5, 2024. Funeral Services will be held at 11:00 a.m. Monday, March 11, 2024 at Holy Family Catholic Church, Brillion. Officiating at the Mass of Christian Burial will be the Rev. Tom Pomeroy with burial at St. Mary Cemetery, Reedsville. The family will greet relatives and friends at Holy Family Catholic Church, Brillion, from 2:00 p.m. until 4:00 p.m. on Sunday, March 10, 2024. A prayer service will conclude the visitation.   • Panthers clinch third straight regional title

    March 3, 2024 The Brillion News REEDSVILLE - For the third consecutive season, the Reedsville boys basketball team won a regional championship. The Panthers blew out Florence 88-58 in the regional final on Saturday night. Reedsville opened the game with a 15-2 lead. Ben Prochnow scored 33 points with 12 assists. Logan Maertz scored 14. The final game followed two dominant victories earlier in the week. The Panthers beat Valley Christian 95-51 in the quarterfinal on Tuesday and Goodman/Pembine 94-59 in the semifinal on Friday. The celebration was two-fold on Saturday night. Senior Camden Dvorachek, who came back from injury for the playoffs, eclipsed the 1,000-point scoring mark for his career. Dvorachek joined his brothers Braiden and Brennen (Reedsville's all-time leading scorer), who also surpassed 1,000 points in their Reedsville careers. Dvorachek scored 18 points against Florence to go with 10 rebounds and nine assists. Next up the No. 1 Panthers will meet No. 2 Lourdes Academy at Pulaski High School on Thursday, March 7, in the sectional semifinal. Other scores No. 3 Brillion came up short in the regional final at No. 2 Xavier on Saturday night in a 76-63 loss. The Lions had beaten No. 6 Wrightstown 64-49 on Friday night. Brillion High School will be the host site on Wednesday, March 6, for the sectional semifinal between No. 1 Kiel and No. 2 Xavier. Hilbert lost in the regional quarterfinal on Tuesday night in a tight 59-57 game to Green Bay NEW Lutheran/Providence Academy.   • Obituary: Sarah E. Sloma

    Sarah E. Sloma, age 82, formerly of Brillion, passed away peacefully after a courageous battle with many struggles in her life and with her health. She found peace and entered God’s loving arms on Monday morning, February 26, 2024 at St. Elizabeth’s Hospital in Appleton. Sarah was born on August 3, 1941 in Maple Grove, WI, daughter of the late Thomas and Julia Cavanaugh. She was a graduate of Reedsville High School. On May 7, 1960 she married Gerald V. Sloma. He preceded her in death on October 9, 2020. Sarah began her career working at Brillion Iron Works and later became a Nurse’s Assistant and worked at various care facilities in the area. She was very active in her first 55 years of life. She loved hunting, sturgeon spearing and fishing out of Two Rivers on the big lake. Sarah also had a love of flowers which she planted around their home and getaway mobile home in Two Rivers. Later in life, Sarah had many medical issues that took a great toll on her. Her pride and joy in life revolved around her family, her home, and being a proud member of the Oneida Tribe. Survivors include one son: Robin Sloma (special friend Jean Klug), Brillion; one daughter: Sandra Sengbush, Appleton; one granddaughter: Sierra; many great grandchildren; her siblings: Francis Cavanaugh, Larry (Sandy) Cavanaugh, Julia (Bob) Stedl, Barb (Gary) Borchardt, Jeff & Mike Cavanaugh; brothers-in-law and sisters-in-law: Patricia Schuh, John (Carol) Sloma, Jim (Shelby) Sloma. Many nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends also survive. She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband; two sons: Mark & Bruce Sloma; one daughter: Kimberly (Rick) Lorenz; one sister: Annie (Ken) Menting; brother-in-law: Tony Schuh; sisters-in-law: Jeannie Cavanaugh, Evie Stetson; and her faithful companion: Marbles. Funeral Services will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Monday, March 4, 2024 at Holy Family Catholic Church, Brillion. Officiating at the Mass of Christian Burial will be the Rev. Tom Pomeroy. The family will greet relatives and friends on Monday, March 4, 2024 at church from 9:00 a.m. until 10:45 a.m. Online condolence may be made.   • Obituary: Diane M. Sablich

    Diane M. Sablich, age 81, of Brillion, passed away peacefully at her home on Saturday morning, February 24, 2024. Diane was born on September 17, 1942 in Stambaugh, MI, daughter of the late Thomas and LaVerne (Begres) Bomaster.  On February 13, 1965, she married Raymond E. Sablich at St. Mary Catholic Church, Gaastra, MI.  He preceded her in death on May 9, 2020.  In 1969, the family moved to Brillion for Ray’s job.  Here, Diane was employed at Carstens Mill and later on, St. Paul’s Home in Kaukauna in the reception area until her retirement.  Diane truly loved raising and spending time with her family, and was always caring for the people in her life.  Her faith was very important to her and she had a great love of music and enjoyed singing in the church choir.  Mom also enjoyed visiting with her mother and sisters while playing canasta. Diane is survived by her four children: Mark (Connie) Sablich, DePere, Karl Sablich, Brillion, Nicholas (Jennifer) Sablich, Brillion, and Mary Sablich, Menasha; five grandchildren: Jamie Sablich, Kaitlynn Marciniak (Cody), Dustin (Elizabeth) Sablich, Claire Sablich, Grace Sablich; four great grandchildren: Emma Darcy, Myles Marciniak, Ethan Darcy, and Mila Stangel; one brother and sister-in-law: Don (Debra) Bomaster, Gaastra, MI; one sister: Adell “Dollie” Kasten, Shawano; and other in-laws: Mary Ann (Dan) Keating, Carbondale, CO, Barbara (Richard) Riordan, Sandy Springs, GA, and Ruth Sablich, Mason, MI; nieces, nephews, other relatives, and friends. She was preceded in death by one sister: Sister Maureen Bomaster; one brother-in-law: Bruce Kasten; one sister-in-law: Jackie Bomaster; and other in-laws: Joseph Sablich and Louis (Phyllis) Sablich. Funeral Mass will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Saturday, March 2, 2024 at Holy Family Catholic Church in Brillion.  Officiating at the Mass of Christian Burial will be Rev. Tom Pomeroy and Deacon Greg Van Thiel.  Cremation will take place following the Funeral Mass, and burial of her cremated remains will be laid to rest at Stambaugh Cemetery, Iron River, MI at a later date.   • Obituary: Dorothy Maile

    Dorothy Maile, age 81, of Brillion, passed away peacefully, Tuesday evening, February 20, 2024 at her home after a short battle with cancer. Dorothy was born on June 22, 1942 in rural Hilbert, daughter of the late George and Ruth (Lemke) Behnke. She was a graduate of Hilbert High School with the class of 1960 and also a graduate of a CNA program. Dorothy was baptized and confirmed at St. Peter Lutheran Church in Hilbert. On April 20, 1991 she married Elliot Maile at St. Peter Lutheran Church, Hilbert. They are currently members at St. Bartholomew Lutheran Church in Brillion. Dorothy enjoyed camping with her husband Elliot, playing cards, going out for breakfast and coffee, visiting with family and friends, cooking and baking, puzzles and word searches. Above all else, she dearly loved her family. Survivors include her husband: Elliot Maile; their children: Steven (Bobbie) Zuelke, Jason (Paula) Zuelke, Sara (Maile) Haese; nine grandchildren: Melodie, Christopher, Matthew, Christian (Daisy), Jessica (Zach), Hannah (Caleb), Micah, Tabitha and Jacob; three great grandchildren: Rowan, Tilly and Dawson; sisters-in-law and brothers-in-law: Caroline Behnke, Shirley (Bob) Boll, Mel Maile, Cordy (Bob) Krummel, Dennis (Lee Ann) Maile and Laurie (Kelly) Behnke. Nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends also survive. She was preceded in death by her parents; son-in-law: Dale Haese; her siblings: Florence (Lloyd) Behnke, Janice (George) Schroeder, Rueben Behnke and an infant brother Joseph Behnke; brothers-in-law: Ronald Maile and Robin Maile; and an infant sister-in-law: Donna Maile. Funeral Service will be held at 4:00 p.m. on Saturday, February 24, 2024 at St. Bartholomew Lutheran Church in Brillion. Officiating at the service will be the Rev. Joshua Brandmahl with burial to follow at Brillion Community Cemetery. The family will greet relatives and friends on Saturday, February 24, 2024 at church from 2:00 p.m. until 3:45 p.m. Online condolences may be made.   • Obituary: Ron Kiekhaefer

    I completed the last journey of my earthly life on February 23, 2024. I was born on Easter Sunday, April 17, 1938 in Wayside, Wisconsin to Armin and Elsie (Jensen) Kiekhaefer. I attended Wayside Zion Lutheran School and Reedsville High School, graduating in 1956. Later that year, I met the love of my life, Beverly Fels from Shirley, and on June 4 1960, we were married. I served my country in the Army in 1957-58 at Ft. Carson, CO, and again in 1961-62 during the Berlin Crisis, serving in the 32nd  Red Arrow Army Division 2/121 at Ft. Lewis WA. After my service, I followed in my dad’s footsteps and worked for over 46 years in the telecommunications field. I started working for The Wayside Telephone Co. in 1956, prior to serving my country, then worked for General Telephone from 1962 to 1966. I received my training by attending a 4-year electronics class at LTI in Two Rivers. In 1966, I returned to The Wayside Telephone Co. and was very instrumental in the conversion of that company to push-button dial. Our company then merged with PTI and later CenturyTel, and in 2002, I retired as their area supervisor. I was a member of the Wayside Fire Department, a DNR Hunter safety Instructor for 15 years, a member of the Wayside Rough Riders and a volunteer at Bellin Hospital in Green Bay. I was a long-standing member of Wayside Zion Lutheran Church and the Way-Morr Lions Club, celebrating 50 years of membership in 2023. In 1966, I started playing guitar at various clubs with an old friend Wayne Falck, and more recently with many local musicians, providing entertainment for senior gatherings throughout the area. While living at Bellevue Senior Living, I had the opportunity to entertain many new friends with my singing and guitar playing. Our marriage was blessed with 5 children, and we were also honored to be foster parents to over 30 children. I am survived by my son Russ (Tracy) Kiekhaefer (Kingman AZ), daughters Sue (Al) Kulich (Plover WI), Kay (Leo) Peck (Napa CA) and Kate Kiekhaefer (Zaachila, Oaxaca, Mexico). I am also survived by my grandchildren Becca, Kate and Ally Kiekhaefer; Emily (Jordan) Latz, and Caleb Kulich; Casey and Curtis Peck; Acalli and Illeana del Angel Kiekhaefer, and great grandchildren Kennedy and Milo Latz. I am survived by two sisters, Carol (Gary) Matuszak of De Pere, and Dianne Opper (Reedsville), former co-worker Darrell Suchomel, also my current friend Ann O’Hearn. I was preceded in death by my wonderful wife Beverly, my parents Armin and Elsie Kiekhaefer, my father and mother-in-law Lee and Adeline Fels, my daughter Nancy and brothers-in-law Robert Opper, Bruce Fels, and Danny Fels. Friends may call at Ryan Funeral Home 305 N. Tenth Street, De Pere, from 4:00PM – 7:00PM Friday, March 1, 2024. Visitation will continue Saturday, March 2nd, 9:00AM at Zion Lutheran Church in Wayside 8378 County Road W, Greenleaf, until time of service at 11:00AM with Pastor Kyle Wangelin officiating.   • Report: FBI part of investigation in Calumet County

    Feb. 22, 2024 The Brillion News CALUMET COUNTY – The FBI was a part of an investigation in Calumet County at the Hickory Meadows Landfill on Thursday afternoon, according to a report from WBAY-TV in Green Bay. WBAY-TV reported the FBI was on site. No reason was given. WBAY-TV’s report can be found here: https://www.wbay.com/2024/02/22/fbi-part-investigation-calumet-county-landfill/ The Calumet County Sheriff’s office did not immediately respond to questions from The Brillion News. The landfill holds a Hilbert mailing address but is outside of the village’s borders. The newspaper will update the story as more information becomes available.

  • Obituary: Jules Herbert Clausing

    Jules Herbert Clausing, 92, entered eternal rest on February 11, 2024.   Jules was known for his love of family, his commitment to his church and community, his integrity and willingness to be a friend to all. Jules was born to Elmer and Frances (Schubert) Clausing on December 13, 1931, in Thiensville, WI. He graduated from Cedarburg High School in 1949. Jules met his wife Carol Engeleiter at the Zivko’s Schwartz Ballroom and they were married at St. Paul’s Lutheran Church in Slinger on August 29, 1953.  Jules and Carol recently celebrated 70 years of marriage. Jules was drafted into the US Army in 1954 and served in Korea through 1955. Upon returning to Wisconsin he started a job with Piper Brothers in the cattle husbandry business.  He and Carol lived in Hartford until retiring to Brillion in 1994 to be near their beloved grandchildren.  Jules enjoyed spending time with his grandchildren, attending school and sporting events, helping them raise lambs, goats and poultry, teaching woodworking skills and supporting them at the Calumet County Fair. Jules enjoyed woodworking, reading, and traveling. He actively participated in 4-H in his youth and as an adult leader.  He was a member of Toastmasters, the American Legion and President of the Brillion Historical Society.  He served his community delivering Meals on Wheels and was an active member of St. Bartholomew Lutheran Church in Brillion.  In his retirement, he enjoyed writing his life memoirs and wrote feature stories published in the Brillion News. Those left to cherish his memory include his wife Carol; two children: Lynn Ann Clausing Rusch (Jeff), Steve Clausing (Gail); eight grandchildren: Melissa Clausing, Michael Clausing (Casey), Rachelle Parks (Alex), Cameron Barricklow (Kendra), Chrisanna Barricklow (Special Friend Tyler), Nathaniel, Maximillian, and Theodore Rusch; and great grandchildren, Jennifer, Ariana, Logan, Nadia, Mateo, Isaiah, Amy, Austin, Starr, Saso and Carmelo as well as extended family and friends. A memorial service will be held Friday, February 23, 2024, at 6 pm at Valley Funeral Home, 2211 N Richmond St, in Appleton.  Visitation will begin at 4 pm until the time of service. An informal gathering will immediately follow the service.
